Bighorn River, June 22, 2006. Water temp 46. 2250 CFS and clear. What a spectacular evening on the Bighorn. Left work early and drove up to the Afterbay, and wade fished. Wanted to test a new dropper that had worked so well on the North Platte. Wind was calm, and only a couple of other fisherman seen, including good friend Capt Dave, who was just starting an A to 3 float with the wife and dog. Had intended to walk down to the first island, but did so well a few hundred yards below the Afterbay, I stayed high. Landed a good 25 fish in five hours, including one chunky rainbow that measured 21 inches. Fish were holding in shallow, as was told to expect by Capt Dave. All rainbows except one dink brown. No hatches to speak of except the usual perennial midges. Saw no risers all evening. Crowds are definitely down now that the other rivers are clearing. Also tried some new homemade golf ball sized indicators, which did their job VERY well, but need to find a little denser foam for durability (the loop used to attach 'em cuts through 'em with a large fish). Also experimented fishing the new rig without an indicator, and found it also worked very well, if not better than with an indicator, but I had trouble seeing the end of the line at much of a distance. I'm thinking I'll give the new RIO thing a try as soon as I can get my hands on some. Capt Dave will be testing the new dropper in deeper water this weekend.
